The Daughters of The House of Red Velvet: Introducing Yael Stormborn
We welcome a new Daughter to The House of Red Velvet. Meet Yael Stormborn. She is a model and performer who loves the night calls. Yael will make her debut on October 2nd at A New Baptism at Pico Union Project.
Today, we ask her about what art influences her, and what memorable responses she has had to her work.
1. Describe who you are and your art.
I’m an adrenaline junkie who hates going to bed early. Part kink performer, part aerialist, part contemporary dancer, part fire fairy. I’m interested in creating & sharing the work that I do with my body & how that translates to be a cultural provocateur.
2. What drew you to the work of The House of Red Velvet?
The commitment to aesthetic & vision and its intersection of light, sound, & touch to evoke an emotional response.
3. What has been a seminal experience?
Making the connection between my skills as an aerialist and working as a rope artist unlocked a lot of fascinating things for me in terms of understanding my identity as an artist.
4. What art do you most identify with? Who influences you?
Mischievous, Ethereal, Fantastical, and risky shit.
Vladimir Nabokov, Grimes, Nicolas Jaar, Longmont Potion Castle, Hikari Kesho, Trevor Magson aka @shatteredvortex.
My rope partner, Simon Sail is also a hugely inspiring influence in my current world!
My art is largely influenced by eroticism and the exploration of abandonment. I enjoy playing with proximity and perspective to highlight intention. I am often found exploring and trying to connect with what feels like unwarranted.
5. What memorable responses have you had to your work?
I love being asked questions about what I do. I love the excitement of possibly opening someone’s eyes to something that can change their life.
6. Name something (anything!) you love and why.
The night. It’s demon hour.
