Cailyn Rice is making her debut performance on March 12th. She is a performance artist specializing in dance. Today, we ask her about her work, and what are her favorite responses to her work.

1. Describe who you are and your art.

As a creative in Los Angeles my art is constantly evolving and taking on new forms. Rooted in dance, physical expression is present in whatever art I enter into. When I create, I seek to feel grounded in my body. I want to be aware of new sensations and emotions while being connected to my breath so I am able to be fully present. I aim to be grounded in my body so I am then able to shift into different forms and transport to other realities. My name is Cailyn Rice and I can’t wait to get lost with you.

2. What drew you to The House of Red Velvet?

There are many alluring aspects to House of Red Velvet - The use of colors, the dark nature, eroticism, and secrecy alone make it intriguing. It wasn’t until I realized that House of Red Velvet was about world creation - about transporting the people lucky enough to view it to another reality, that I knew I wanted to be apart of it. Director, Olivia Bellafontaine and all of the artists involved put themselves into their work and then come together to create an immersive, transcendent show.

3. What is integral to your work as an artist?

I desire to tell stories. When words fail me I turn to dance and art to communicate. While props and costumes are a lovely addition to any piece - I find, that above all else, there is nothing more important to me than making people feel something when they take in my work.

4. Who are your biggest artistic influences?

I remember watching music videos of Bjork when I was younger and being absolutely enamored by her. I was entranced by her music, costumes, dancing, and performance. She will forever remain a major influence and inspiration in becoming the artist that I am today.

5. What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I love the responses I receive from those who know me best. The people who have intimate knowledge of me as a human in my everyday life are the ones who can see me the most clearly when I create. I was afraid of you. I fell in love with you. And you dance in cursive are just a few of my favorite responses.

6. Name something you love and why.

I love to witness people in their truest form. There is nothing more beautiful than being able to experience someone raw, while they exist in their purest essence. When someone is innately themselves and feel safe enough to share that with you - there is nothing more sacred.
